MARSEILLE, France -- Defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came through a stern test against 117th-ranked Jan-Lennard Struff to win 7-6 (4), 7-5 Saturday, setting up an Open 13 final against third-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia after he upset top-seeded Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 6-2. Tsonga was pressured by the German player in both sets. The Frenchman saved five break points in the first set. Struff broke his opponent at the start of the second set, before saving three break points of his own in the next game. But Tsongas experience told when he broke Struff twice at the end of the second set to reach his 19th career final, where he will bid for an 11th title. He leads 3-1 in career head-to-heads against Gulbis, who has won all four of his previous finals. In beating Gasquet for the first time at his third attempt, Gulbis had 15 aces and proved clinical on Gasquets normally strong serve, converting three of his four break-point chances. "Today was very good. Everything was working: serve, backhand," Gulbis said. "I was a bit tired from yesterday, so I just tried to keep the points short and I felt so good doing that." It was a frustrating afternoon for Gasquet, who again fell at the semifinal stage after his defeat to countryman Gael Monfils at the Open Sud de France in Marseille earlier this month. "It was very difficult for me. He was just better," Gasquet said. "On a fast surface like this, its very tough to play against somebody like Ernests. He was just more powerful than me and didnt have any weakness. I didnt have any chances, not a single break point." The Thornhill, Ont., native, who is ranked 11th in the world, said hed hoped he would be ready when Canada begins its World Group first-round tie against Japan in Tokyo on Friday. John Brown Jersey . The Union looked to have grabbed a big win in the 88th minute when Amobi Okugo finally put the hosts in front. But a terrible giveaway by Union goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi handed Earnshaw the equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time, keeping the Union two points back of fifth-place Red Bull New York for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The four-time MVP was in good spirits when he made his first public appearance on the field since having neck surgery Sept.TORONTO -- Erin Mielzynski is not a fan of heights but she still tried diving from a 10-metre tower this summer. The Canadian skier also learned how to surf last spring and took on the waves along the Kananaskis River. Mountain biking is not her forte but she was determined to give that a try too. She calls it "fear training." The slalom specialist is hoping that pushing herself outside her comfort zone during the off-season will help make her more mentally prepared on the slopes. "Our sport has to do with a lot of fear," she said Tuesday at a ski team availability. "Theres fear standing at the start. Fear of not doing enough, fear of the speed. I mean, its fast." Mielzynski, 23, competed at the 2010 Vancouver Games and has two World Cup podium appearances on her resume. In March 2012, she became the first Canadian since Betsy Clifford in 1971 to win a World Cup womens slalom race. She added a World Cup silver last season and has a shot to make a podium appearance at next years Sochi Olympics. Mielzynski hopes that fear training will help her stay calm and focused when the pressure is heightened during competition. "Its just about pushing your limits," she said. "Do one thing a day that scares you and if not, then maybe do two the next day. I think thats really important because it keeps you guessing, keeps you pushing and keeps the love of the sport alive." Mielzzynski, who trains for five hours each day, felt invigorated after trying new things in the off-season.dddddddddddd "When Im going down fast and Im avoiding rocks and things, I have to be so aware of what Im doing," she said. "Even though the fear is there and the heart rate is high, I still have to be aware. And thats the same with skiing. "The gates are coming at me so fast and I have to be aware." Mielzynski, from Guelph, Ont., competed in the season-opening giant slalom event last week in Austria but didnt advance to the second run. It was not her specialty event and she had a late start, but she still found it to be a valuable experience. She was also pleased that her mindset improved before the race and during the competition. "It seemed like training and thats what Ive been striving for for the last two years in a race," she said. "Although my results didnt show what I wanted them to, it was nice to stand in the start and (now I) feel confident going into the next races." Shes learning to feel afraid and to make sure its a positive thing. "Theres always an element of fear," she said. "It should be there. If youre totally comfortable, its not right. But you can learn ways to get around it. "Sometimes its not thinking so much, its just getting in the start, pushing out of it and dealing with whatever you have to deal with."
